What\u2019s the most rewarding part of your job?<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most rewarding\npart of my job is being a part of the student experience from admissions all\nthe way through to graduation. It is rewarding to play an integral part of our\nstudents\u2019 experience in Canada by supporting them in their initial transition\nin Canada and helping students overcome any challenges they encounter as a\nresult of living with a host family in a new country.  Being away\nfrom home can be challenging for anybody and it can be difficult to adjust to\nunfamiliar surroundings, different food, and a new language. For international\nstudents who go abroad at a young age, it can be even more challenging.\nHomestay can help provide a safe and caring environment where students can\nadjust to life in a home away from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the most important considerations when making\nhomestay placements?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When matching a student to a homestay family, careful consideration\nis given to the individual student\u2019s background, age, gender, and preferences.\nWe want to ensure that each student has a successful and meaningful experience\nat Braemar College, and ensuring that the student is happy and comfortable in\ntheir accommodation arrangements is the first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the key features you look for when adding\nhomestay families to the network?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our students\u2019 safety, happiness and wellbeing is at\nthe core of what we consider when adding homestay families to our networks.\nEach homestay family that has been added to our network is carefully vetted in\nthe application process. A homestay coordinator visits each home to ensure that\nthe living conditions meet our standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What, according to the students, are the best parts\nabout staying with a homestay family?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our students love the fact that when they arrive in\nCanada, they are not alone in navigating their new city. They are warmly\nwelcomed by their host family and have the opportunity to live and learn from them.\nStudents enjoy experiencing first-hand different cultures and the diversity\nthat Toronto has to offer. They are able to experience new cultures,\ntraditions, and foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the advantages of homestay over residential\naccommodation?<\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homestay has a lot of advantages compared to\nboarding at a school. The primary advantage is that you are fully immersed in\nlocal culture. Depending on the level of involvement that you choose to\nhave with your host family, a homestay can present an opportunity to experience\nthe realities of daily life in the new country. Additionally, you can have\naccess to local knowledge on events, attractions, or local sites that you would\nnever have known of. Your homestay family may provide you with tips\non where to visit and give you advice on surviving in your new\nenvironment. If the timing is right, you also get to experience local\ntraditions and holidays such as Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving or other\nholidays that your host family may celebrate, depending on their own\nbackground, culture and religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important advantage is that you can\nimprove your English through complete immersion. You have more exposure to\nauthentic daily English compared to boarding where exposure tends to be\nprimarily with other ESL students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the parents\u2019 points of view, it is one of\nthe safest forms of accommodation for students. Knowing that their children\nwill be fed regularly with a balanced diet and will be taken care of by a host\nfamily gives the parents a peace of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
